Badaguish Cairngorm Outdoor Centre
Badaguish Cairngorm Outdoor Centre exists to help people with disabilities develop new skills and enjoy the outdoors.
The outdoor education and activity centre – located in Cairngorm National Park, Invernessshire – offers a range of activities including:
The centre is run by a charitable trust called Speyside Trust, and was originally established in 1980 as an equal opportunities project by trained countryside ranger Andrew MacKenzie.
Andrew, chief executive of Badaguish says:
“Speyside Trust and Badaguish development has always been guided by responding to local need. Over time – 26 years – this has allowed number of services to grow.”
The services it offers today include:
“What’s special is the first hand experience of the excitement and pleasure Badaguish gives to people. Especially young people who respond so well to the freedom and challenge of the outdoors”
Ultimately JobConnect will run the centre, however Speyside Trust will continue to provide care and training at Badaguish. The trust and centre have also developed a partnership with Highland Council Education Department as it is the only centre in Highland that can provide equal opportunity outdoor education.
Andrew says: “Badaguish is successful because everyone enjoys the outdoors and we all understand the message that disabled people have a right to this too. The best aspect is that motivation is great when you can see and feel the results of your work around you every day in people’s faces.
“What’s special is the first hand experience of the excitement and pleasure Badaguish gives to people. Especially young people who respond so well to the freedom and challenge of the outdoors and often have so little opportunity. You can see there will be lasting impact in their lives – being part of this has a deep emotional impact that bonds everyone that works here too.”
