Haven Products

Social enterprise firm, Haven Products, operates as a commercially viable and efficient business, delivering services andsolutions to companies looking to outsource their production processes. Haven Products provides meaningful employment opportunities for disabled people; currently 80% of the firm’s workforce has a disability.

Operating from three key sites across Scotland: Inverness, Hillington and Ballieston, Haven Products delivers business services in a range of areas, from packaging to component assembly to print finishing. Its client list ranges from international blue chip firms to local companies.

Haven Products initially started in Hillington in 1946 and was originally established to provide employment for those returning injured from the Second World War. The organisation was set up by a group of entrepreneurs who worked with the Red Cross and the Princess Louise Hospital in Erskine. From 1963, Haven was owned by the Red Cross. In 2004 Haven Products became part of Momentum, a national not-for-profit organisation which is part of the international Rehab Group.

In the Highlands Haven Product’s Inverness facility was established in 1973 and provides a long list of services including printing, packaging, component assembly and mailings to a wide range of clients including Highland Council, Lifescan Scotland and Raigmore Hospital.

In recent years, Haven Products’ innovative approach to business and its employees has been recognised with a number of awards including Investors in People, the Social Enterprise Coalition’s Enterprising Solutions Award and the Social Firms UK Star Award.

As part of its commitment to sustaining a flexible and innovative approach, Haven Products also developed a Complementary Workforce model which has further expanded the opportunities available to staff. This innovative model presents Haven Products staff with the chance to work in public and private sector organisations supported by members of the Haven management team. This has also led to employment on a permanent basis with these businesses.

CASE STUDY Mike Caraher, 52, was unemployed for two years before finding out about Haven Products and the employment opportunities that they provide for people with disabilities. After a successful interview, he started working with the social enterprise firm as a production operator within its facility in Inverness where his job entailed component assembly and mailings.

Haven Products provides a wide range of services to its clients therefore, when approached by Lifescan Scotland which was looking for someone to fill a gardening post, a member of the Haven Products management team identified Mike as being the ideal candidate as he was known to have a passion for the outdoors and gardening.
With continued support from Haven Products, Mike has been working for Lifescan Scotland since 2007 and is a highly valued member of staff and is described as a “joy to work with” and as someone who “brings great qualities to the organisation”.

Mike Caraher said: “Working for Haven Products gave me new skills, new friends and gave me back my independence.”
